What Are the Odds?
Read 1 Samuel 13:16 through 15:35; Luke 8:26–56
How is this for odds? The Philistines were the enemies of God’s people. They had three thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and innumerable troops. All these were against Israel’s army. The men of Israel saw their situation. They estimated the odds, saw the facts, tallied the opposition, and drove themselves into a panic. After everybody headed for the hills, Jonathan and his armor bearer were the only ones left.
Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6).
The odds were overwhelming, but God would overwhelm the odds. Numerical odds do not apply to God’s people. Jonathan believed in what could not be seen, not with the opposition standing directly in front of him. His trust was not in personal or corporate resources. The odds in his favor did not need to increase before God could act.
Challenge for Today: Trust in the One you cannot see.
